Jan 26

It is with heavy heart I write one last time. Mark passed this morning. His suffering has ended and he is no longer in pain. He went to be with our Lord and Saviour. He was surrounded by family and he went in peace. Thanks to all of you who followed Mark's battle. He was one tough warrior and fought hard to the end. We got to say our goodbyes this morning. Hospice came out. Julia was here with the hospice chaplain and they were great. Father Bill came over and prayed with us and spent quite a bit of time here.

After Mark was gone from the house, I went into the bedroom to shower and it really hit me that he was gone. The bed was made and he wasn't in it. It was just not right seeing the bed without Mark there. He's really gone.

The funeral will be at St. Michaels Catholic Church at their NEW location on North College St. It will be Friday morning at 10am. We will be having visitation at Jeffcoat Trant funeral home on Thursday night from 6-8pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Mark Bertus Scholarship Fund at any Auburn Bank location or mail to PO Drawer 3110 Auburn, AL 36831-3110.

If anyone is coming from out of town, the Holiday Inn Express will offer a special rate if you give them Mark's name. The address is 1801 Capp Landing Opelika, AL 36804. Ph (334) 749-5250.

I will post if anything changes or as we know more. Thanks to all of you who have supported us through this battle. Hold tight to those you love today and always. Please continue to pray for those battling cancer. May God bless and keep you all!!!!!

Ronda

Dear Rhonda,
The world is a lesser place today. Thank you for keeping us updated on Mark's condition through the years.

I left OU before Mark joined the finance program. But, through interactions at various FMA conferences, Sandy and I found Mark to be friendly, intelligent, quick witted, and full of spirit. We will miss his company.

Sincerely,
Gary & Sandy Caton

This hurts and is extremely painful, he redefined the way finance was taught at Auburn. Best professor I could every imagine. I am sure every student of him will remember him for lifetime.

I am so sorry to hear this news! I have been trying to stay updated by reading your posts since this all began. I was a student of Mark's in 2005 and kept in contact with him until my graduation in May 2007. He was such a great professor and person. He helped write several recommendation letters for me as well. Overall, he had a huge positive impact on my life, career, and time at Auburn. I have a brother (age 27) currently battling cancer for the third time. It never gets easier and I know what your family has had to go through. Again I am so sorry and my thoughts and prayers are with your family!

God bless you and everyone close to Mr. Bertus. I was one of the lucky few to be taught by Mr. Bertus this past summer and will never forget the best professor a student could have had. He wouldn't let us call him doctor, he let us know that the first class meeting. He was an amazing inspiration, also. He came to class everyday throughout his battle with cancer, sometimes with his medication hooked into him, and gave everything he could give to teach us his knowledge of Finance. He truly loved his family, he talked about you all everyday in class, honestly. God will bring you all together again one day...and i'm sure he'll be teaching Finance and as goofy as ever in Heaven. I thank you so much for keeping us all updated with Mr. Bertus and my family sends all of our love and prayers.

It mixed emotions for everyone who knew Mark. On the one hand, we grieve for you and miss him. On the other, those of us who believe as you do know that he's gone not to some vague "better place" but to the BEST of places.

I was recently watching the third and final film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Return of the King). In one of my favorite scenes, all the defenders of the city are hopelessly outnumbered, and it looks like all will be killed.

The hobbit named Pippin is very afraid, and he turns to Gandalf the wizard and says, “I didn’t think it would end this way.”

Gandalf replies, “End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path . . . one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass . . . and then you see it.”

Gandalf seems to gaze at something off in the distance, so Pippin asks, “What? Gandalf? See what?”

Gandalf says, “White shores . . . and beyond. The far green country under a swift sunrise.”

The hint of a smile appears on Pippin’s face and he says, “Well, that isn’t so bad.”

Gandalf returns the smile and says, “No . . . no, it isn’t.”

I think of Mark like that, and I can't help but smile. He's no in that fair country - a land with no more pain, no more suffering, and no more limitations - nothing but Joy.

Even so, Death is the enemy. But not for him - he's gone through it.

The pain is for those who are we're left behind - but only for a while. It'll be hard in the next few months, but it does get easier with time. And best of all, y'all WILL be reunited soon enough. And after that, you'll have an eternity together.

We continue to lift you up in prayer for the days to come.

Hi Ronda.

I'm one of Mark's cousins from Louisiana and have been following your blog for a while now. I'm so sorry to hear that Mark has passed but we all know that he is in a much better place and are glad he isn't suffering any more. I'm going to try to make it to the services with Aunt Barbara and Uncle Bill (Aunt Kathleen and Uncle Brent will know who I am) but am unsure if I can get off of work. Either way, please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you have been for the last couple of years.

All of my love,
Ashley

I’m sorry for your loss but glad Mark is no longer in pain.

What an inspiration and example you and Mark have been to many of us with your love, courage, and faithfulness over the last 2+ years. You may not know how many people you have touched with your blog postings. As one of Mark’s other former professors commented the other day, Mark probably had a wider circle of close friends than anyone I know. For the last few years, friends and former professors of Mark here at OU have rarely met without someone asking: “Have you read Ronda’s latest posting on Mark.” Mark touched a lot of people when he was at OU and you have with your accounts of the battle the two of you waged together against his disease. Just as the world would be a better place if more of us had Mark’s optimism, dedication to teaching, and genuine concern for others, it would be a better place, if more of us had your courage and faithfulness.

With both sorrow and admiration,

I am so sorry for your loss. It is one that is felt by many students as well. I had Professor Bertus for Personal Finance summer of 2006. He left a lasting impression on me because of his humor. I throughly enjoyed the class and am so saddened to hear about his cancer battle. I would love to make a donation to the scholarship to honor him. May God Bless you and your family.
